Punisher War Journal Volume 3: Hunter Hunted TPB (Punisher) by Matt Fraction

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly not bad, July 22, 2008
It has been no secret that I have not been a fan of Punisher War Journal since its debut. As a lifelong fan of the character, I have always felt that Garth Ennis' MAX take on the character is the definitive take on the Punisher, where as Matt Fraction's (Immortal Iron Fist) take on Punisher War Journal has been laughable to say the least. Hunter Hunted, the third collected volume of Punisher War Journal, finds Frank Castle in the middle of World War Hulk as Hulk ally Mung comes into Frank's sights. Later on, Frank goes toe to toe with old Spider-Man villain Rhino, and witnesses the debut of a new Kraven the Hunter. What makes Hunter Hunted the best collected volume of the series so far is that Fraction's script work is just hilarious, this time around being intentionally so. The moments with Rhino are undoubtedly the best parts of the book, especially an exchange involving an ill-fated cell-mate. Also, now that Fraction has abandoned the Captain America/Punisher costume, this regular Marvel universe take on Frank Castle harkens back to his early glory days before suffering from overexposure. While the story is enjoyable, the artwork from Ariel Olivetti, Cory Walker, and Scott Wegener is just disappointing. Flaws aside though, Hunter Hunted is a surprisingly not bad Punisher War Journal entry, and here's hoping that things get better from here.
