5.0 out of 5 stars The Mystery with a Twist and then another Twist, December 29, 2007
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang ended up being much more than I originally expected. An incredible movie to say the least. Humor, suspense, and a little action for taste. The movie has all star performances from Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer.

The movie starts off rathe innocently in Indiana as innocence seems all the part. You may start wondering if you are watching the right movie. Quickly come in to narrate and essentially telling the story is Robert Downey Jr. The story tells a rather good tale about three characters. Downey plays a character named Harry who seems to be trying to find himself as a small time crook nobody. Kilmer plays a guy who goes by the name of Gay Perry and yes he is gay. Lastly the rather unknown Michelle Monaghan plays the attractive Harmony who is trying to make it as an actress.

This is about as far as the story gets from where it goes. The mystery begins quickly and never gets too dark. What makes the story so good is the great chemistry between these three actors and the comedy that ensues. Shane Black knows how to make a great mystery with comedy since his name is best known for Lethal Weapon. There are times where I couldn't stop laughing even during the darkest scenes. Don't let the fact that there is a lot of humor since the story still is great.

Watching the Blu-ray version was well worth it. The picture was vibrant and filled with life. Bringing out most of the scenes the way they were intended to be seen. The sound was great on my speakers. An excellent movie for a great price. Despite the extras lacking. If you are looking for a wonderful movie that will keep you laughing with a great story then Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a must have to any collection. This is now one of my favorite movies.

The Shining [Blu-ray] DVD ~ Jack Nicholson

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Sensational, December 29, 2007
This classic remains a sensational, psychological thriller over 25 years later. The story remains the same but now it comes in fantastic high definition. Stanley Kubrick's vision was different from how Stephen King originally wrote it. Although it's Kubricks vision that makes this movie so enjoyable.

Set in beautiful Colorado the story is dark in a bright environment. Jack Nicholson plays an average father named Jack. Jack has been unemployed for a few months and is trying to be a writer. To further his writing he takes the opportunity to move his family to a desolate resort in the Rockies. The resort closes during the Winter and hires Jack to be a caretaker during that period.

Jack's son Danny has begun to exhibit abnormal behavior by making an imaginary friend out of his finger. This friend tells Danny things that seem to exhibit a special ability. Jack's wife Wendy just seems to want everything to go right in their lives. Unfortunately the move to the resort is the worst thing that can happen.

Most of the acting is excellent in this movie and the scenes are still scary at times. Even though movies have become more action packed and fast paced The Shining still shines. That is why movies like this get even better with time.

The Blu-ray version is okay. The remaster is not the best I have seen for an older movie. The picture is more defined but still not what I would like to see. I am not going to mark down the score since this movie is too good for that. The picture is better and the price is right. For people who want to add a wonderful classic to their Blu-ray collection, The Shining is quite the movie to have. For the price it can't be beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Reborn, December 29, 2007
Close Encounters is thirty years old and can be considered a classic among cinema fanatics. The movie was released when special effects were in their infancy. Movies like Star Wars had just come out and the idea of bringing UFO's to life was becoming possible. Now thirty years later movies like this seem very simple. Although the story never grows old and now in hi-def it is well worth another look.

From the minute I got my hands on this set I realized how nice it actually is. Containing just two discs but hours worth of features. The first disc contains the movies in three different editions. The Original Theatrical Version contains the movie how it was originally seen on the big screen. Special Edition is the same version that was released several years ago with a few additional features that was added to the Theatrical Version. The Director's Cut contains additional parts of the movie that were Steven Spielberg intended to be in his movie. For all of you confused don't worry the set comes with a high quality glossy timeline sheet with the extra parts that were added to each edition. On this disc you are also given an option to run the movie with all the extras. So essentially you have four versions of this film.

When I started watching this movie I was in awe. This was one of the best hd transfers of a movie I have ever seen. I have watched numerous movies over ten years old and this one looked best. The color and visuals looked superb. The sound is superb and the way it was intended to sound.

For those of you who have never seen the movie it involves several characters. A group of scientists are researching strange discoveries that are taking place like a fleet of WWII planes that went missing thirty years prior. The discoveries are just the beginning as UFO's begin to make appearances all over the world. Richard Dreyfuss is one of the people who witnesses the UFO activity and from that point his life is changed. Trying to discover what the meaning of this is. Of course in the meantime his family and work life are completely disrupted. Although this is just the beginning of this mysterious journey.

Close Encounters is a magical movie to say the least. The story is timeless and has been copied for many years without the same success. The special effects have improved greatly over the years but movie still remains a classic. Now on Blu-ray this movie gives people a whole new reason to own it. The extras make it well worth it. This is a beautiful collection that should be added to any movie fan.

The Simpsons Movie [Blu-ray] DVD ~ Dan Castellaneta

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't have a Cow Man, December 28, 2007
Critics Beware! This movie is not for those looking for depth or an intricate plot. I have been watching The Simpsons since The Tracy Ullman Show. Twenty years and counting. The series has had it's highs and lows. The formula still remains consistent. What I can't understand is how people love to criticize this show and now movie. I will lay it out for you. Should you watch this movie or not and why you should watch it.

The Simpsons Movie begins like so many of their shows. The starting is never where it will go. Plot twists are all part of the scenario. First off for those who aren't familiar with Bart Simpson, where have you been the past twenty years? The movie won't get to involved in the characters lives which is great. Keeping the story funny and simple is what it's all about.

Generally you get a feeling that this movie is trying to send a message. A message about pollution and the environment that could only be done Simpsons style. Since that is only one of the many messages that comes from this movie. Family and community are important elements as they always are. What makes The Simpsons great is they are never preachy.

So who should and shouldn't watch this movie:
1. If you are a Simpsons fan this is a definate yes.
2. If you don't know who The Simpsons are then probably forget it.
3. If you are looking for Oscar material forget it.
4. If you laugh at everything then go for it.

I have viewed this movie on Blu-ray and I must say stick to the DVD version. There is not enough reason to pay the extra money for an animated movie that doesn't look extremely vibrant in HD. The extras are limited so there is not a lot of value here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a thrill ride , December 25, 2007
I haven't watched Speed in many years. Now the timeless classic is on Blu-ray in all it's cinematic glory. These movies make it clear why Blu-ray is what the director intended his movie to look like after all these years. After all the movies that have come out recently that use computer graphics it's great to watch a movie that uses traditional special effects and stunts.

Speed could be considered an epic in what it has done for action movies. The sit on the edge non-stop unpredictable action that makes movies like this great. The name of the movie implies what the movie is about. Dennis Hopper plays a deranged man who is out to get what he believes is his. He will do anything to get it including killing dozens of people. The only thing that stands in his way is an action cop played by Keanu Reeves.

Although some of the acting could be considered cheesy at parts it is still good. Sandra Bullock does an excellent job in one her first big movies. This movie did enough to put these stars on the blockbuster map. Of course after watching the movie some of the scenes are very unrealistic but that is why you need to watch the movie without being a critic which is sometimes hard for me. From the first minute on the action was intense and the movie stayed fun making this a movie I could watch over and over again as I already have.

The Blu-ray version is excellent with a very refined picture and greatly improved sound. This is how the movie was intended to be seen. Especially when watching it on a big screen with full surround sound. For anyone looking for a great action movie in high definition this is it.

A Christmas Story [Blu-ray] DVD ~ Yano Anaya

5.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Classic Brought to you in Glorious HD, December 25, 2007
A Christmas without A Christmas Story is unheard of around these parts. I have been watching this classic since I was a child. From the first time on VHS to DVD and now Blu-ray. This story is probably one of the best Christmas tales to come around the past 25 years. So how does this HD version stack up against all the others? Very well if you must know.

For all of you familiar and unfamiliar with the story it takes place in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1940's. An America many people seem to remember fondly. The story centers around a boy named Ralphy and his Christmas wish to have a Red Rider BB gun. Of course the adults all seem to feel the gun is unsafe and you the repeated phrase, "You'll shoot your eye out." Although this is really just a small part of the story.

Ralphy is like many boys of his age then and now. On the cusp of adolescence while still having his childish tendencies. During the movie you get to know his friends and all the people around him. Every time I watch this movie I realize how much things are the same when it comes to Christmas in middle class America. This story seems to tell it better and more realistically than most movies made.

Now if you have not bought this movie on DVD it is a great value. The picture is only mildly improved from it's DVD version. Sometimes you will be wondering if it's really in HD. Although despite that this is a great movie. Christmas or not it is a classic. The Blu-ray version comes with some extras like a anniversary follow up with a few of the child actors. Although that is not entirely exciting the movie is.
