5.0 out of 5 stars An Loving Ache in My Heart, A Powerful Tug on the Soul, August 19, 2001
An adult film; finally an adult film! This achingly beautiful, loving and soulful film, directed by Keith Gordon, took me inside characters so real and so believable I wish I had them for friends. The story revolves around Fielding Pierce (the fine, vulnerable and nuanced actor, Billy Crudup) and Sarah Williams (the sensitive and sensuous Jennifer Connelly), who fall in love because of their differences which are also their strong and bonding similarities: they care people, and they care about the world. One is driven to change from within the 'system' and one works from the outside of it. Yet, their love is their anchor and their north star. Using flashbacks judiciously, and heightening the story of Fielding and Sarah, the film traces Fielding's emotional and spiritual crisis after it appears that Sarah has died. With fine supporting performances, and a sharp compassionate script based upon a novel of the same name by Scott Spencer (who appears briefly), 'Waking the Dead' is a cup overflowing with adult themes after a long stretch of mostly summer adolescent celluloid .... Take your sweetie, or someone who you want to be your sweetie to this original and finely crafted film. (I viewed it on the Sundance Channel.)

5.0 out of 5 stars William Shattner's Preserver (Star Trek), August 17, 2001
I've never met a Star Trek episode or book that I didn't like, which is probably the best one can say about the modern time version of Will Rogers' "I never met a person I didn't like.* One good thing about Shattner's TV role as Captain Kirk and his series of books including Preserver is that we have one of the original Gene Rodenberry cast (who lasted all the way through the series and into seveal more)who helped very much make it what it is and was, William Shattner, interpreting things and carrying on with the help of his admirable co-authors. Another good thing in Preserver is the *Wise Aliens* - it is so in contrast with the usual Bug Eyed Monster (BEM) Sci-Fi movies! I think that it did wonders for Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series. Wise People/Creatures behind the scenes, like mysterious benefactors in mystery stories (Agatha Christie had them all over the place - not just mysterious psychopaths), appeal to our good and Noble parts. Long Live Star Trek! I have to add that time and space and dimensional travel and related mysteries are really important in modern physics (quantum entanglement may involve all three). As usual, science fiction keeps up with the latest research and sometimes goes ahead.

A Cold Case by Philip Gourevitch

4.0 out of 5 stars A Cop, A Murderer and the Power of Restless Memory, August 7, 2001
Frankie Koehler killed two men; Andy Rosenzweig, a New York City cop and friend of one of the dead men, re-opens the case 27-years after the murders and the disappearance of Koehler--the cold case. Writing concisely, with truth and compassion, but straight-forwardly about the characters, Mr. Gourevitch, a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine, tells the story of a small-time 'wise-guy', the arrow-straight conscientious cop and how time may and may not soften the edges of good and bad people. I enjoyed the integrity and clarity Mr. Gourevitch strenuously employs to tell this sad, hopeful and redemptive story of justice ultimately achieved. All the characters, including the ethically misguided defense attorney, Murray Richman, are presented as real and human: the good, the bad and the ugly. For an honest study of human psychology, police procedure and some life in our times read 'A Cold Case.'
